Best Bank Statement Fraud Detection Software in 2026: 7 Tools Compared. TamperCheck.ai blog cover

Bank statement fraud detection software checks a submitted statement for edited balances, inserted transactions and fully AI-generated statements before it reaches an underwriting, tenancy or onboarding decision. The tools in this category differ less in whether they "detect fraud" than in how: some read the file's metadata, some extract and re-review the data, and some run forensics on every field.

This comparison covers seven tools. We make one of them - TamperCheck - so read our ranking with that in mind. Every claim about another vendor below comes from that vendor's own public pages, checked in September 2026, and is linked to our full side-by-side comparison where you can see the source for each row.

Key takeaways

  • Generated statements are the test. A statement generated end to end has no edit to find. Tools built around editing traces and known-institution metadata are weakest here.
  • Field-level beats a score. A finding that names the altered balance is something an underwriter can act on. A document-level risk score is a starting point for more work.
  • Access varies widely. Only two of the seven publish prices and let you test without a sales call.

What to look for in bank statement fraud detection software

  1. Generated-statement detection. Ask how the tool handles a statement that was never edited because it was generated. Metadata and template checks look for evidence of a change; a generated file has none.
  2. Findings at the field level. "The closing balance on page 2 was altered" is a reason you can give for a decline. "This file was flagged" is not.
  3. Balance arithmetic. Every running balance should be recomputed against the row before it. One edited deposit breaks the chain on every row after it.
  4. Scans and phone photos. Many statements arrive as images, where PDF-structure checks don't apply. Image forensics have to take over.
  5. Speed at your volume. A check that takes minutes or needs human review can't sit inline in an application flow.
  6. Data handling. Find out whether statements are stored, for how long, and whether they train shared models.
  7. Time to first result. Can you test on your own statements this week, or only after a demo and a contract?

1. TamperCheck.ai - best overall

TamperCheck runs 200+ forensic layers on every statement - balance arithmetic, character-level font metrics, the PDF's text layer against its rendered pixels, producer metadata, and pixel-level forensics on scans and photos - plus a dedicated pass for AI-generated documents. The verdict names the altered field and where it sits on the page.

  • Best for: lenders, landlords, fintechs and KYC teams that want a forensic verdict inside their own workflow.
  • Covers: 100+ document types from 190+ countries, so payslips, IDs and utility bills in the same application go through the same check.
  • Access: self-serve, published per-document pricing, first top-up matched with free credits, live the same day via the API.
  • Data: analysed in memory and never written to disk; never used for training.
  • Limits: it verifies documents, not bank accounts. If you need transaction data pulled directly from the bank, pair it with an open-banking provider.

2. Inscribe - best for large institutions buying a fraud suite

Inscribe sells a managed fraud platform: forensic, network, semantic and perceptual signals, case management and an AI agent that writes an assessment of the whole application. AI-generated documents are named in its detection set. Pricing isn't published and access starts with a demo and an annual contract. Its network signals compare documents across customers, which requires retaining them.

Choose it if you want a packaged fraud operation and have the procurement runway. If you want the forensic verdict underneath, without the platform or the cross-customer data sharing, see Inscribe vs TamperCheck.

3. Ocrolus - best for lenders who also need extracted data

Ocrolus is primarily an extraction engine for bank statements, pay stubs and tax documents, with human reviewers in the loop. Its Detect product flags file tampering and metadata manipulation, alongside arithmetic checks. AI-generated documents are not a headline claim, and human review means results take minutes to hours.

Choose it if you need transcribed, reviewed financial data and fraud signals from one vendor. If you already have extraction and need to know whether the statement is fake in about a minute, with no human reviewers seeing your documents, see Ocrolus vs TamperCheck.

4. Resistant AI - best for enterprise AI-fraud programmes

Resistant AI's document product checks any document type in any language against 500+ fraud indicators (their claim) and names anomalies from ChatGPT and Gemini image generators explicitly. Output is a document-level risk score with the indicators that fired. Pricing isn't published and access is through a demo and an enterprise contract.

Choose it if documents are one channel in a broader financial-crime programme. If your problem is specifically documents and you want the altered field named on a published per-document price, see Resistant AI vs TamperCheck.

5. Snappt - best for US multifamily leasing

Snappt is a US leasing platform with document fraud detection as one component. It checks 10,000+ document features and metadata against 2,000+ financial institutions (their claims) and returns a pass/fail recommendation in 10 minutes or less. It doesn't publish a dedicated pass for generated documents; its route around them is payroll connectivity.

Choose it if you run US multifamily properties and want income, identity and rent verification in one leasing workflow. For statements that were generated rather than edited, or applicants outside US leasing, see Snappt vs TamperCheck.

6. Fortiro - best for ANZ lenders

Fortiro scores payslips, bank statements, tax documents and invoices, tuned to Australian and New Zealand financial documents, and says it detects synthetic AI-generated content. It returns a document-level fraud risk score with the rules that failed, in about 30 seconds (their claim). Access is sales-led.

Choose it if your book is mostly ANZ income documents. For the specific altered field, or documents from beyond ANZ, see Fortiro vs TamperCheck.

7. VerifyPDF - best for low, steady PDF volume

VerifyPDF checks PDF metadata, structure, content streams, editor traces and font integrity, and returns a document-level flag in about 5 seconds (their claim). It advertises detection of AI-generated statements without publishing the method. Pricing is a monthly subscription capped at 150-1,000 documents, and API access starts on the Professional plan.

Choose it if your volume is flat and fits a tier. If your analysts need to explain a decline, or your volume is spiky, see VerifyPDF vs TamperCheck.

How we compared them

Each tool was assessed on the seven criteria above using its own product, pricing, security and privacy pages, checked in September 2026. Where a vendor doesn't publish something, the table says "not published" rather than guessing. Claims marked "their claim" are the vendor's own figures, which we haven't independently tested. Our side-by-side comparison pages list the source for every row and are rechecked before each update.

FAQ

What is the best bank statement fraud detection software? For most lenders, landlords and fintechs, TamperCheck.ai: it runs a dedicated pass for AI-generated statements, names the altered field, returns a verdict in about a minute, and can be tested self-serve on published per-document pricing. Inscribe suits institutions buying a full fraud suite; Snappt suits US multifamily leasing; Fortiro suits ANZ lenders.

Can software detect altered bank statements? Yes. An edited statement breaks things a screen can't show - running-balance arithmetic, font metrics on the edited digits, the PDF's text layer against its pixels, and producer metadata. See how bank statement fraud detection works.

Is there free bank statement fraud detection software? Free tools can show some evidence - for example, a PDF metadata extractor reveals which tool last saved a file. A full forensic verdict needs a paid check; TamperCheck matches your first top-up with free credits so you can test on your own statements.

How do I choose between these tools? Test each on your own statements, including a few you know were altered and one generated with an AI tool. The right tool is the one that catches those and tells you which field changed.
