Detect tampered and deepfake Ukraine ID Card

The Ukrainian ID card, ID-картка, is the plastic ID-1 identity card with a contactless chip issued since 2016 by the State Migration Service, and the Diia app shows a digital version of it. Its three-line machine readable zone carries ICAO check digits and its record number embeds the birth date, so forged cards fail against their own printed fields.

What a genuine Ukrainian ID card contains

The card prints surname and given names in Ukrainian and Latin, patronymic in Cyrillic, sex, date of birth, nationality, place of birth, a nine-digit document number, a record number, issue and expiry dates, issuing authority, signature, and photo. The record number is fourteen characters beginning with the birth date, followed by a four-digit serial and a control digit. The back carries a three-line TD1 MRZ of thirty characters per line.

Latin names follow the 2010 national transliteration, so they can differ from older passports, the patronymic is not in the MRZ, and the term is four or ten years from issue. Diia screens and physical cards coexist, and a screenshot of the app is not the card itself. The older paper booklet and the foreign travel passport are separate documents.

How Ukrainian ID card forgeries are made

  • MRZ check digits

The machine readable zone carries ICAO 9303 check digits for the document number, birth date, expiry, and a composite. A failure means the zone was typed or edited after generation.

  • MRZ against printed fields

The MRZ repeats name, birth date and expiry, and each has to agree with the printed face. If only one side disagrees, the other was edited.

  • Record number and birth date

The record number opens with the holder's birth date. A date block that differs from the printed date of birth contradicts the card's own data.

  • Term and number length

The document number has nine digits and the term is four or ten years from issue. A different length or a term that does not fit breaks the issuing rules.

  • Photo and text patching

A pasted portrait or retyped name or date leaves resampling steps and font differences that outline the edited region.

What TamperCheck checks on an Ukrainian ID card

TamperCheck runs 200+ forensic checks across three layers and returns a risk score from 0 to 100 with plain-English findings tied to specific regions of the document. These three carry the most weight on this document class.

  • Machine-readable zone validation

Check digits across every MRZ field are recomputed, and the encoded name, number, and dates are compared against the values printed on the face of the document. Forgers routinely update one and forget the other.

  • Portrait substitution and face-swap analysis

The document is isolated from whatever it was photographed on, then the portrait region is assessed against the card surface around it. A pasted or generated face rarely matches the substrate it was placed onto.

  • Date and validity consistency

Issue, expiry, and period dates are checked against one another and against the file's own creation metadata, which catches backdating and validity extension.

  • And many more checks

The three above are the layers that carry the most weight on an Ukrainian ID card. Every upload runs the full suite of 200+ checks regardless of document class, spanning file structure and metadata, pixel-level forensics, font and text rendering, optical and print characteristics, provenance signals, AI-generation signatures, and many more checks.

Who verifies an Ukrainian ID card, and why

Banks, employers, and aid and onboarding teams. In each case the document is being used to unlock money, access, or a legal status, which is exactly what makes it worth forging.

How to verify an Ukrainian ID card in 4 steps

  1. Photograph every face

Capture the front and the back flat at full resolution, so the MRZ characters and the record number survive close analysis.

  2. Validate the MRZ

Recompute the ICAO check digits for document number, birth date, expiry, and the composite, and compare the zone with the printed fields.

  3. Cross-check the record number

Compare the date block of the record number with the printed birth date, and the expiry with the four or ten year term.

  4. Run a forensic check on the file

The MRZ carries the structural evidence and the print carries the edit history. TamperCheck runs 200+ forensic checks, including MRZ check-digit validation and patch detection, and returns a risk score from 0 to 100 with findings tied to regions of the image.

Frequently asked questions

What is the record number on a Ukrainian ID card?

A fourteen-character unique entry number that opens with the holder's birth date, then a four-digit serial and a control digit. A date block that does not match the printed date of birth is an internal inconsistency.

Why does the Latin name differ from an older passport?

Current Latin names follow the 2010 national transliteration, while the 2007 to 2010 system differed. A difference between generations is normal, but a difference between the card's MRZ and its printed fields is not.

How long is a Ukrainian ID card valid?

The term is four or ten years, with the shorter term used for applicants under eighteen and similar categories. An expiry that does not fit the issue date and term is a structural red flag.

How does TamperCheck verify a Ukrainian ID card?

TamperCheck recomputes the MRZ check digits, compares the zone with the printed fields, tests the record number date block, and inspects the portrait region for patching. Uploads run through a single REST endpoint, are processed ephemerally and not stored, and findings tie to specific regions.

TamperCheck analyses ukraine id card uploads with a hybrid forensic and AI pipeline tuned for this document class. Upload endpoints accept PDF and common image formats; class is inferred automatically. See the API documentation for authentication, async jobs, and webhooks.
