Detect tampered and deepfake Cedula de Identidad (Chile)

The Chilean cedula de identidad, issued by the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificacion, is the national identity card and the primary document for banking and fintech onboarding. Its RUN ends in a mod-11 check character, so a fabricated number usually fails its own computation, and the separate document number gives a second identifier to cross-check.

What a genuine Chilean cedula contains

The RUN is seven or eight digits plus a check digit or the letter K, written XX.XXX.XXX-Y, and it stays with a person for life. The card also prints a separate numero de documento, nine alphanumeric characters on current cards, that identifies the physical issue and changes on renewal. The front carries surnames, given names, nationality, sex, birth date, emission and expiry dates, signature, and photograph.

Cards run in generations, from the 2002 plastic card to the 2013 card with a QR code and chip and the version issued from December 2024, and a RUN ending in K is valid. Cards are valid ten years, and foreign residents hold RUNs in the same range as citizens, so several layouts coexist and each is judged against its own design.

How Chilean cedula forgeries are made

  • RUN check-digit validation

The check character is a mod-11 computation over the digits, giving 0 for a result of eleven and K for ten. A RUN failing the computation was invented.

  • Identifier separation

The numero de documento is a different number from the RUN. A card showing the same value for both, or the wrong identifier in either slot, signals assembly.

  • RUN range

Company tax numbers sit in a much higher range than individuals. A RUN in the company range on a natural person's card is internally inconsistent.

  • Expiry and generation rules

The validity is ten years from emission, and 2013 and later cards carry a QR region. An expiry that breaks the rule, or a missing code region, contradicts the design.

  • Photograph and field patching

Portrait swaps and edited lines leave cut-line edges, font passes, and resolution steps that differ from uniform issued print.

What TamperCheck checks on a Chilean cedula

TamperCheck runs 200+ forensic checks across three layers and returns a risk score from 0 to 100 with plain-English findings tied to specific regions of the document. These three carry the most weight on this document class.

  • Portrait substitution and face-swap analysis

The document is isolated from whatever it was photographed on, then the portrait region is assessed against the card surface around it. A pasted or generated face rarely matches the substrate it was placed onto.

  • Barcode and QR payload comparison

Encoded payloads are decoded and compared against the human-readable values printed alongside them. Editing the visible text without re-encoding the barcode is a common and highly detectable mistake.

  • Date and validity consistency

Issue, expiry, and period dates are checked against one another and against the file's own creation metadata, which catches backdating and validity extension.

  • And many more checks

The three above are the layers that carry the most weight on a Chilean cedula. Every upload runs the full suite of 200+ checks regardless of document class, spanning file structure and metadata, pixel-level forensics, font and text rendering, optical and print characteristics, provenance signals, AI-generation signatures, and many more checks.

Who verifies a Chilean cedula, and why

Chilean banks, fintechs, and telcos. In each case the document is being used to unlock money, access, or a legal status, which is exactly what makes it worth forging.

How to verify a Chilean cedula in 4 steps

  1. Capture both sides

Photograph front and back flat at full resolution so the RUN, document number, and QR region survive close analysis.

  2. Validate the RUN

Apply the mod-11 computation, remembering that the check character can be K, and confirm it is not in the company range.

  3. Compare the identifiers and dates

Check that the document number differs from the RUN and that expiry sits ten years after emission.

  4. Run a forensic check on the file

The RUN carries the structural story, and the print carries the edit history. TamperCheck runs 200+ forensic checks including RUN validation and patch detection, returning a risk score from 0 to 100 with findings tied to specific regions of the image.

Frequently asked questions

How is a Chilean RUN validated?

Its final character is a mod-11 check computed from the digits, with a result of eleven giving 0 and ten giving K. A RUN that fails the computation is not a valid number.

Why does a RUN sometimes end in K?

K is the check character when the computation gives ten, so a RUN ending in K is valid. It should not be flagged as an anomaly.

Is the document number the same as the RUN?

No. The numero de documento identifies the physical card and changes on renewal, while the RUN identifies the person for life.

How does TamperCheck verify a Chilean cedula?

TamperCheck validates the RUN check character, separates it from the document number, tests the expiry rule and QR region for the card's generation, and inspects the portrait for patching. Uploads run through a single REST endpoint, are processed ephemerally and not stored, and findings tie to specific regions.

TamperCheck analyses cedula de identidad (chile) uploads with a hybrid forensic and AI pipeline tuned for this document class. Upload endpoints accept PDF and common image formats; class is inferred automatically. See the API documentation for authentication, async jobs, and webhooks.
