# Detect tampered and deepfake Credit Report

> A credit report is the only document in a lending file that the applicant did not write and no employer issued, since a bureau produced it, and that is precisely what makes an applicant-supplied copy worth forging. Lift the score, delete a default, prune the recent enquiries, and the rest of the report still reads as authentic. The tradeline table underneath is what betrays it. TamperCheck analyses bureau reports through a single REST endpoint.

## What a genuine credit report contains

A bureau report opens with the bureau's branding, a report reference, and the exact date and time it was generated, then an identity block: name, date of birth, a masked national identifier, current and previous addresses, telephone numbers, and employment as reported by lenders. The score appears with its range and the scale version used, accompanied by reason codes explaining it. An account summary counts total, active, closed, and overdue accounts with sanctioned and outstanding amounts. Tradelines follow, one per credit account, and an enquiry section lists who searched the file.

The score is a function of everything below it, which is what makes a lifted score so visible. Each tradeline carries an opening date, a sanctioned amount, a current balance, and a month-by-month payment history grid, and the account summary is simply those rows totalled. The overdue count has to match the tradelines showing arrears, the outstanding total has to equal the sum of the balances, and the payment grid has to agree with the days-past-due status printed beside it. Everything is bounded by the report's generation date.

## How credit report forgeries are made

### Score substitution

The three-digit score is replaced with a higher one and nothing beneath it changes, leaving a strong score above tradelines in arrears and reason codes that explain a weak file. It is the single most common edit on this document and the most self-contradicting one.

### Payment grid cleaning

Late markers in a tradeline's month-by-month history are recoloured or relabelled as current, and the days-past-due status beside them is updated to match. The account summary usually is not, so the report keeps counting overdue accounts it no longer appears to contain.

### Tradeline deletion

A defaulted or written-off account is removed from the table entirely. The summary counts and outstanding totals then describe more accounts than the report actually lists, and the deleted row often leaves a break in the alternating row shading the bureau applies.

### Enquiry section pruning

Recent searches are deleted to hide a run of applications to other lenders, which underwriters read as a sign of distress. The enquiry count in the summary block is easy to overlook once the rows below have gone, and the two stop agreeing with each other.

### Report date refresh

A stale report has its generation date and time changed so it appears to have been pulled this week. Bureau reports embed that date in several places, including the header, the footer, and the most recent enquiry, and forgers routinely update only the one at the top.

### Whole-report reconstruction

A complete report is rebuilt in a bureau's house style, with tradelines and a score invented together so they agree. These are consistent by construction, so assessment turns on branding fidelity, layout precision against the bureau's real output, and whether the report can be reproduced from the bureau directly.

## What TamperCheck checks on a credit report

TamperCheck runs 200+ forensic checks across three layers and returns a risk score from 0 to 100 with plain-English findings tied to specific regions of the document. These three carry the most weight on this document class.

### Table structure integrity

Inserted and deleted rows leave structural artifacts behind: inconsistent spacing, misaligned columns, and formatting the visible table no longer accounts for.

### Letterhead, logo, and issuer plausibility

Issuer branding is checked for resolution and compression consistency against the body text it sits on. A logo lifted from a website carries the signature of its source, not of the document.

### Date and validity consistency

Issue, expiry, and period dates are checked against one another and against the file's own creation metadata, which catches backdating and validity extension.

### And many more checks

The three above are the layers that carry the most weight on a credit report. Every upload runs the full suite of 200+ checks regardless of document class, spanning file structure and metadata, pixel-level forensics, font and text rendering, optical and print characteristics, provenance signals, AI-generation signatures, and many more checks.

## Who verifies a credit report, and why

Lenders, landlords, and credit committees making approval decisions. In each case the document is being used to unlock money, access, or a legal status, which is exactly what makes it worth forging.

## How to verify a credit report in 4 steps

1. **Pull the report yourself rather than accepting a copy.** A credit report is issued by the bureau, so the applicant's consent lets you obtain it directly. A report you pull cannot have been altered between the bureau and you, which removes the entire class of forgery this document attracts.
2. **Test the score against the file beneath it.** Read the tradelines and the reason codes before the score. Arrears in the payment grids, accounts marked written off, or a run of recent enquiries all contradict a strong score, and that contradiction is the usual evidence of an edited number.
3. **Reconcile the account summary with the tradeline rows.** Count the accounts and add the balances in the tradeline table, then compare them with the summary block at the top. Deleted rows and cleaned payment grids leave the summary describing a report that no longer matches itself.
4. **Check the report date everywhere it appears.** The generation date appears in the header, the footer, and against the most recent enquiry. Confirm they agree, then run the file through TamperCheck, which returns a risk score from 0 to 100 with findings tied to the regions that were rewritten.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can someone fake a credit report?

Yes, and it is easier than faking most financial documents, because the recipient rarely knows what the bureau's real output looks like. The common forgeries are a substituted score, deleted defaults, and a pruned enquiry section on an otherwise genuine report. The defence is not closer reading but a different source: pull the report from the bureau yourself.

### How do lenders verify a credit report is genuine?

Lenders obtain the report from the bureau directly under the applicant's consent, which makes the applicant's own copy unnecessary. Where a supplied copy has to be used, they reconcile the score against the tradelines and reason codes, check that the account summary totals match the rows beneath it, and confirm the generation date is consistent everywhere it appears.

### Why is an applicant-supplied credit report weaker evidence than one you pull?

Because the document passes through the applicant's hands, and that is the only window in which it can be altered. A bureau-pulled report arrives from the issuer with nothing in between. Every forgery described on this page depends on the recipient accepting a PDF the applicant produced rather than requesting the file from its source.

### What gives away an edited credit score on a report?

The material underneath it. A score is computed from the tradelines, so a lifted number sits above arrears markers, written-off accounts, or reason codes describing a much weaker file. Forensically, the edited digits also render and compress differently from the surrounding text, which TamperCheck reports as a finding tied to that region.
